Super Absorbent Polymers

 

Super Absorbent Polymers (SAPs) are dry granular polymer crystals.  They have the unique ability to absorb and retain large volumes of liquid.  In fact, they can absorb and retain up to 400 times their weight in liquids with minimal increase in volume or weight.  Wherever a liquid waste stream needs to be stabilized, you’ll find Super Absorbent Polymers at work.  They are suitable for applications such as:

  • petrochemical spills
  • remediation projects
  • landfill closures
  • environmental cleanup projects

Super Absorbent Polymers quickly stabilize dredge sediments, aqueous waste streams and industrial sludges.  They safely and efficiently convert liquid wastes to a solid phase.  As a result, the waste is easy to handle and transport for landfill disposal.  The polymers also mix quickly to improve efficiency.

Super Absorbent Polymers are also a cost-saving alternative to other bulk sorbents.  Kiln dust, portland cement, or sawdust can add volume and weight to a load.  In fact, they often double or triple the volume!  Super Absorbent Polymers reduce liquid waste volume while reducing transport and disposal costs.  They also form a strong chemical bond with liquid wastes.  The result is a solid mass that doesn’t biodegrade and release liquid, which also makes it safe for landfill disposal.

Some of our clients ship contaminated soils to destination landfills by rail.  Since EPA regulations require liquid wastes to be solidified prior to transport, adding Super Absorbent Polymers during the loading process is an effective solution.  They safely solidify both hazardous and non-hazardous wastes.  Proper use also ensures that the waste will pass the paint filter liquids test (EPA 9095).
