Gabion Baskets and Reno Mattresses

Gabion baskets and Reno mattresses are rectangular wire mesh baskets available in various sizes and dimensions.  They are filled with rock and linked together, thus creating a strong, permeable, flexible structure.  The gabions are manufactured from heavy gauge double-twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh.  They are also reinforced with heavier wire along the edges to prevent them from collapsing if the wire is cut or broken.

Since gabion baskets and Reno mattresses are easy to assemble, they require no skilled labor.  They can also be filled with material already onsite.  As a result, there is no need to purchase additional fill – a cost-effective option for your project.

Wire Types

Gabion basket and Reno mattress wire is selected based upon the application as well as jobsite conditions.  Below is a list of suggested uses for each wire type.

Galvanized – double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh made from steel wire which is galvanized zinc coated prior to being double-twisted into mesh.  The fasteners and lacing wire are also made from the same zinc coated wire.

  • Dry conditions, not submerged below water level
  • Non-corrosive soil or water applications

PVC Coated – double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh made from the same steel galvanized zinc coated wire with an additional Poly Vinyl Coating (PVC).  In addition, the fasteners are stainless steel and the lacing wire is the same PVC coating as the mesh.

  • Wet conditions, submerged below water level
  • Use in corrosive soil or water applications

Galfan – double-twisted hexagonal steel wire mesh coated with a Zinc/Aluminum coating or Galfan coating.

  • Wet conditions or submerged water applications
  • Oceanic applications
  • Extremely corrosive soil or water applications

Applications

Products that can withstand environmental  stresses such as channel or foundation shifts, soil pressure and impact of high velocity waves are essential to the success of a project.  Due to the flexibility of the wire, the gabion baskets and Reno mattresses settle, twist and conform to the changes in the land.  In addition, the strength of the wire contains the fill material while resisting the pressures that are put upon them.  Consider using a geotextile either as a separation layer or inside to reduce the amount of fill required.  Gabion baskets and Reno mattresses can also be vegetated, making them a good choice for bioengineering projects.

  • Mass gravity retaining structures
  • Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls
  • Vegetated slope reinforcement
  • Slope stabilization
  • Slope reinforcement
  • Channel lining and channel relocation
  • Slope and bank protection
  • Shore and stream bank protection
  • Weirs, groins, and jetties
  • Drop structures
  • Culvert outlet scour pads and headwalls
  • Bridge abutments
  • Erosion control
